Five years ago, Muay Thai boxer Charles Morgan was experiencing very bad chronic back pain and was told by doctors that he may never fight again.
As a result of his back condition, Mr. Morgan received back surgery and a few disc replacements and attended physical therapy.
Shortly afterwards, not only did he go back into the ring, but also opened his own muay thai gym, Fight City Muay Thai and Fitness, located on Addendum Lane South in Pembroke.
Mr. Morgan and his team recently came back from participating in one of the largest Muay Thai tournaments in North America, the 2021 Classic Muay Thai World Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. The tournament has over 1000 participants from all around the world each year.
“I always wanted to test my skills against the best Thai Boxers in the world and [in this tournament] we did just that,” he said.
Team Bermuda, led by Mr. Morgan and Kru Daniel Chacon, had a 8 win-7 loss record at this year’s tournament. Ashley Aiken competed in the semifinal round and Mr. Morgan himself participated in two big fights during the tournament; a 90-second knockout during the semifinals and a unanimous win during the finals and subsequently won the North American Class B Championship Belt.
Mr. Morgan then explained to TNN’s Trevor Lindsay exactly what Muay Thai is about Called “The art of the eight limbs”, participants use their knees, elbows, kicks and punches on their opponents and every spot on the body is legal except for the groin.
“ [In Muay Thai], people can wrestle and clinch their opponents, but they cannot take anyone to the ground and land on top of them,” Mr. Morgan said.
He urges young people to never stop believing in themselves and to never give up on their dreams.
“ You can do anything that you set your mind to and you do not have to listen to people when they tell you that you cannot do something, just go ahead and do it,” he said.
