The Bermuda Olympic Association Gender Diversity and Inclusion Committee proudly hosted its inaugural Women in Sports Leadership Awards, a significant event aimed at honoring the achievements of women in sports leadership both locally in Bermuda and on an international level. Following the ceremony, Donna Rayner shared her reflections with TNN’s Trevor Lindsay, who captured the spirit and energy of the evening in a post-event interview.
“We wanted to highlight everything that women in sport are doing,” Donna said. “Not just in Bermuda, but overseas as well. I think tonight showed people just how impactful these women are worldwide.”
One woman who received particular recognition was Judy Simons, a name synonymous with sports leadership in Bermuda. A touching video presentation celebrated her contributions, capturing the attention and emotions of the audience. Donna, who was herself encouraged to join the Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) board by Judy, spoke candidly about their bond and her admiration for her former colleague.
Judy and Phil Guichard had insisted that Donna join the BOA, even as she served as president of the Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA).
“I kept telling Judy, why did you step down? She had so much more to give,” Donna reminisced. “We talked regularly, and I miss her. Her birthday is tomorrow, actually. There was no way we could have this award ceremony without honoring her.”
As someone who has represented Bermuda on the Olympic podium, Donna embodies the impact of women in sports leadership. When asked how she inspires young women and girls to aim high, she shared her own journey and the challenges she faced while pursuing a position on the World Athletics Council. Her message was one of resilience and determination.
“My goal was to sit on the World Athletics Council,” she explained. “I wasn’t successful the first time, but I didn’t give up. I learned what I needed to do, and the second time, I did everything to make it happen. I want young girls to know—don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Be passionate, be committed, and put in the work.”
The night closed with thoughts about the future of the awards ceremony. When asked if this would become an annual event, Donna suggested that a biennial format might allow for even more honorees to be recognized, ensuring that no woman’s achievements are overlooked.
This evening marked a historic celebration of women’s contributions to sports in Bermuda, a reminder of the barriers broken and the journeys yet to be taken. Through initiatives like this, the Bermuda Olympic Association Gender Diversity and Inclusion Committee aims to inspire future generations of female leaders in sports.
