Remembering Ethan Arruda, “A Tragic Loss and Legacy of Kindness”

In the early hours of Sunday, October 27th, a promising young life was cut short in a tragic incident that has shaken the Bermuda community.

Seventeen-year-old Ethan Arruda lost his life in what should have been a carefree night, celebrating Halloween with friends. Instead, the evening took a devastating turn when a group off individuals intruded, leading to an altercation that claimed Ethan’s life.

In an exclusive interview with his parents, Alvaro and Monica Arruda, spoke to TNN’s Trevor Lindsay, sharing heartfelt memories of their son and a plea for the community to reflect on the deeper issues at play.

Ethan’s father, Alvaro, expressed the pride he felt watching his son blossom. Describing him as “a shy kid who kept to himself,” he said that this past year was transformative for Ethan. He had finally found a close-knit group of friends, bonded through their shared love for fitness and mutual encouragement. “They uplifted each other, and it made Ethan open up,” Alvaro shared, recounting how Ethan became more comfortable sharing his thoughts and emotions, bringing their family even closer. “This year was the best we had as a family. We were understanding each other.”

Academically, Ethan was a standout, a natural learner who excelled without the need to study extensively. He had plans to graduate from MSA next year. “He was smart,” Monica recalled. “He’d tell me, ‘Mommy, I got this,’ and he’d come home with grades that amazed us.”

The Arruda’s spoke about the silver chain and graduation ring that Ethan wore—items imbued with special meaning. The chain was a gift from Monica’s late brother, Sergio, who had passed from cancer. After some hesitation, the family had decided it was time for Ethan and his sibling an older brother to cherish Sergio’s memory through his jewelry. “Ethan wore that chain and ring nearly every day,” Monica said. It was during the alleged attempt to take this precious chain that Ethan was attacked. He fought back—a testament to the strength his parents had instilled in him, but the violence was quick and fatal.

Through their grief, Alvaro and Monica was questioned about the violence affecting young people. Alvaro couldn’t answer, “What is so wrong with our young men that they leave their homes to inflict harm on others?” The Arrudas voiced frustration that these issues aren’t being addressed in Bermuda. Alvaro remarked, “In our time, we went to parties to have fun. Now, it’s different.”

As they grieve, Alvaro and Monica remember Ethan as a kind, selfless young man. “He went out of his way for his friends,” Alvaro said, chuckling as he added, “He’d share everything, except his honey buns.” This gentle humor, a precious memory, reveals Ethan’s spirit.

The family also reflected on the shock and anger they’re experiencing. Monica voiced the turmoil of processing their loss and waiting for justice. Returning to work, she hopes, will provide some sense of normalcy in the face of overwhelming grief.

Ethan leaves behind a brother, Logan, who will forever carry forward his memory, and a community who will remember him as a caring, spirited young man who just wanted to enjoy a night with friends. For the Arruda family, Ethan’s memory will always be one of kindness, courage, and love. His story, they hope, will urge the community to come together, address the issues facing young people, and protect the dreams and safety of future generations.
