The City of Hamilton wishes to remind the public of upcoming traffic disruptions at the Spurling Hill junction due to scheduled infrastructure works. Significant traffic light upgrades are planned for this location, which involve extensive channeling for electrical conduit, reconfiguration of sidewalks, and the installation of a new pedestrian crossing.
Part of the traffic management requirements for the Spurling Hill project include temporary changes to the #3 bus route and bus stop locations.
To accommodate the construction work, the City will temporarily close the car parking bays along the curb on the left side of Court Street between Church and Reid Streets. This section will be set up as a temporary bus stop. The City will also relocate a couple of benches to Court Street to provide seating for waiting passengers.
Temporary signage indicating “No Parking” and “Buses Only” will be installed to facilitate the new bus stop arrangement. Additionally, a sign will be placed at the Church Street bus stop to inform passengers of the temporary relocation to Court Street.
To align with the City’s plans, The Department of Public Transportation will alter the route for the #3 Bus service, which typically travels via Cavendish Road. During the construction period, these buses will now travel via Palmetto Road, Frog Lane, Montpellier Road, and back on route on Middle Road, in both directions.
The #1, #2, #7 and #8 buses will also be diverted to Court Street, and then Front Street for the outbound journeys. Inbound journeys for these routes will remain unaltered.
These changes will come into effect on Saturday, August 10, 2024, and remain in place for the duration of the Spurling Hill traffic intersection upgrade project.
Works at Spurling Hill are scheduled to commence on the weekend of Saturday, August 10, and will continue for approximately six to seven weeks. During this time, appropriate road signage will be in place, and a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan will be implemented to manage traffic flow in and out of the City and minimize disruption to motorists.
The Cavendish Car Park will remain operational throughout the works, and area businesses will stay open. However, the City advises commuters to avoid the junction, if possible, during peak traffic hours.
