The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party (PLP) is aware of the recent TNN report regarding internal Party matters. We are addressing that report directly.
Westminster-style legislatures, including Bermuda’s House of Assembly, are under the sole control of the Speaker of the House. Therefore, it is only the Speaker who decides when the House is closed or adjourned. To be clear, there has never been a time when a Premier of any Overseas Territory, including
Bermuda, can adjourn a sitting of Parliament.
Secondly, regarding allegations of autocracy within the Party, we firmly reject this characterisation.
The PLP values inclusivity, transparency, and democratic principles. Central Committee meetings and other Party forums are open to all members, and we encourage active participation and engagement. These meetings, which are fully attended by members from around the island, remain an essential part of our
decision-making process, where all members are encouraged to voice their views. We believe that strong participation, robust debate, and the free-flowing expression of various perspectives make us stronger, not weaker.
We acknowledge that there can, on occasion, be robust exchanges between our members. Such exchanges, while sometimes intense, reflect the passion of our members for expressing their opinions and for representing their constituents effectively.
We again refute the allegations surrounding Party Constitutional reform as The Party did upon the initial release by TNN. That story and the reference to it in the latest story are complete fiction, bearing no resemblance to the truth.
We understand that political dynamics are ever-changing, and leadership comes with its challenges.
Our Party Leader David Burt has led the PLP with dedication and a clear vision for Bermuda’s future. He has successfully led this country through difficult times. We remain united in our commitment to serving the people of Bermuda and addressing the pressing issues facing our island. The PLP stands by its principles of democracy, transparency, and service to the community. We will continue to engage with our members and constituents to ensure that their voices are heard and their concerns addressed. We are confident in the strength and unity of our party as we move forward together.
