It appears Christmas will be less than merry for a number of workers who were recently laid off at the BAC Group of Companies.
Reports reaching TNN are that 19 people have been laid off with just one week’s salary just two weeks before Christmas.
Sources say the workers were advised of the company’s decision last Friday morning when they individually called into BAC offices and informed the decision was taken for financial reasons.
It is understood several Bermudians were impacted by the move. One worker with more than 30 years service was among those let go along with an expectant mother and another woman undergoing cancer treatment.
It is understood workers received no guarantees as to when or if they will be called back to work.
TNN sought a response from the BAC Group, CEO Denton Williams released a statement to TNN.
“BAC Group can confirm that the prolonged stagnation of Bermuda’s economy has led to staff layoffs at the Group.
The decision to lay people off was difficult and we extend our deep gratitude to those affected for their contributions.
We will remain focused on navigating these challenging times while continuing to diligently serve our customers.”
